Police vow to hunt down killers of Anambra YPP ward chair

Must Read

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Aderemi Adeoye, has vowed that the Command will hunt down and bring to justice the killers of the Nanka Ward Chairman of the Young Progressive Party, Joe Mohale.

Adeoye, who condemned the killing in the strongest possible terms, described the killers as “cowards who have murdered sleep”.

The commissioner stated this in a press statement issued by the command’s spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, on Tuesday.

“They might think they have committed a perfect crime and that they would get away with it but they delude themselves.

“The Police are already working on vital clues to unmask the perpetrators.

“The Command wishes to re-assure all law abiding citizens especially in Nanka not to be afraid but to join hands with the Police in bringing the murderers and their sponsor to justice,” the statement added.

Similarly, the command has also debunked reports claiming that Umunze, in Orumba South LGA of the state, is the headquarters of Eastern Security Network.

A kidnap victim had, while narrating his four-day ordeal in a kidnappers’ den in Umunze, stated how his family members called the police for a rescue operation and that the police allegedly told them they could not go to Umunze because the community is the “headquarters of ESN and a no go area”.

But reacting to the reports making the rounds in social media, Ikenga urged members of the public to disregard the claims, insisting that the Divisional Police Headquarters in Umunze is functioning at full capacity and the Police continue to discharge its responsibilities to the people in the area.

Ikenga said, “The attention of Anambra State Police Command has been drawn to a story making the rounds on social media claiming that Umunze in Orumba South LGA is the Headquarters of ESN and that the Police regard the town as a ‘no-go-area’.

“While sympathising with the kidnap victim who was allegedly held for four days in the area, it is important to let the public know that the claims attributed to the man is false and baseless.

“The public will recall that the Police-led Forward Operating Base in Aguata just last month smashed the insurgents’ Camp at Ogbunka near Umunze, rescuing three kidnapped victims, including a Priest; recovering nine stolen Vehicles and three Pump Action Guns and arresting three of the criminals. So how can anyone claim the Police describe Umunze as a no-go area?

“The Divisional Police Headquarters in Umunze is functioning at full capacity and the Police continue to discharge its responsibilities to the people in the area.”

He added that the Police, are, however, aware of insurgent activities in the South of Umunze in a neighbouring state, and collaborative effort is ongoing to root them out of place.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, wishes to assure the good people of the State that their safety remains the most important priority of the Police Command and this is permanent,” he added.
