Oliseh, Babatunde mourn Morocco earthquake victims

Super Eagles captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh, has commiserated with the victims of the earthquake that struck Morocco last Friday, reports.

According to multiple reports, the 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck in the High Atlas mountains south of Marrakesh, leaving at least 2,497 people dead and several wounded.

The tremor collapsed homes, blocked roads and swayed buildings as well.

According to Morocco’s interior ministry, the death toll as of Monday afternoon, detailed 2,497 dead, WHILE 2,476 people were injured.

Reacting to the incident, Oliseh, whose wife Nadia, hails from Morocco expressed sadness over the incident.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in Morocco,” he said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with all Moroccans, those who lost lives and property due to this unfortunate incident.”

Former Eagles midfielder Michael Babatunde, who previously featured for Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca and Raja Casablanca, also expressed grief at the loss of lives in the wake of the earthquake.

“The report of the earthquake and the death of many people in Morocco made me so sad, “Babatunde, who was part of the Eagles squad at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, told .

“I had to call some of my ex-teammates at Wydad Casablanca and Raja Casablanca to ask if their families were not affected. I just hope they rescue more survivors because it is a sad moment for Morocco.”

Meanwhile, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI declared three days of national mourning on Saturday, as the scale of the devastation became clearer.

The royal palace said civil protection units had been deployed to increase stocks of blood banks, water, food, tents and blankets.
