Whitney Adeniran: Lagos officials visit parents, reveal cause of death

Lagos state officials on Thursday visited parents of Whitney Adeniran, the Chrisland School pupil who died during the school’s inter-house sports on Feb. 9.

The visit of the officials from Lagos State Ministry of Education came as the cause of death of the student was revealed.

Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, the Commissioner for Education, made this known in a statement on Thursday, signed by Mr Ganiu Lawal, Assistant Director, Public Affairs of the Ministry.

Adefisayo, according to the statement, gave the assurance during a condolence visit to Mr and Mrs Adeniran at their residence in Lagos.

“Nothing will be spared at ensuring appropriate interrogation of the cause and prosecution of anyone found culpable,” she is quoted as saying.

The commissioner said that the Ministry of Education shared in their grief and would be with the Adeniran family in the journey for justice.

The commissioner’s team during the visit, according to the statement, include Mr Abayomi Abolaji, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education; Mrs Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance; and Mrs Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive-Secretary, Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency.

Earlier, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo, in a statement, had also said that his office had received the report of the post mortem conducted on the late Whitney.

“The Office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice has received the Post Mortem report dated 1st of March, 2023, issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, in respect of Whitney Omodesola Adeniran who was until her demise, a student of Chrisland School, Opebi.

“The post-mortem report revealed the cause of death to be Asphyxia and electrocution.

“The Directorate of Public Prosecutions has been instructed to issue Legal Advice on the matter immediately.

“We use this medium to commiserate with Whitney’s family, even as we reassure Lagosians that anybody found culpable would immediately be charged to court,” the statement read.

Recall that 12-year-old Whitney died on Feb. 9 during the school’s annual inter-house sports at Agege Stadium.
