Professor Lai Oso, of the Department of Mass Communication at the School of Communication, Lagos State University, died in a car accident that occurred on Saturday evening.
The 67-year-old was returning from a conference in Abraka, Delta State when the fatal incident claimed his life.
Oso, as he’s fondly called, was described as a humble and generous man of exemplary good character, and was loved by many.
The erudite academician was undoubtedly a literary ‘powerhouse.’
Here are eight things you should know about the late professor:
1. Born, Muraino Olayiwola Oso, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in Maa Communication, from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
2. He proceeded to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. At OAU, Oso bagged a Master’s degree in International Relations.
3. Oso, being an academician to reckon with, was granted a Federal Government scholarship for his doctorate programme in Mass Communication at the University of Leicester, England in 1977.
4. The late Don worked as a reporter on both radio and the News Agency of Nigeria.
5. Between 2011 and 2015, Oso served as the Dean, of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, at Lagos State University.
6. Prior to his sudden death, he was the President, the Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals of Nigeria.
7. The LASU don taught courses in Journalism, Media and Governance, Political Communication, Development communication and Theory.
8. Some of the books written by the late communications expert include ‘Voice of the Voiceless’ and ‘News Writing and Reporting’.
