Waldrum upbeat after Mexico defeat

Must Read

Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, says his side’s opening day defeat to Mexico at the Revelation Cup is another learning curve for the nine-time African champions, reports.

The Falcons suffered a 1-0 loss to Mexico after a late goal from Kiana Palacios handed Waldrum’s side their sixth straight defeat at the León Stadium in the early hours of Thursday.

Despite the result, Waldrum believes the four-nation tournament will afford the Falcons a robust preparation for the forthcoming 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

“It’s a learning process for us. It was an opportunity to try new things. New ideas and new tactics,” Waldrum said after the defeat.

“We started the game strongly though they dominated the last 20 minutes of the first half.

“It’s always disappointing when you concede late in any game. We will learn from this defeat and prepare for our next game.”

His Mexican counterpart, Pedro Ramos, said his team had enormous respect for the Nigerian players.

“Nigeria is one of the best teams in Africa, and if you look at their players, they are playing in some of the best leagues in the world.

“The win is worth it but you have to respect them,” he said.
