Udoh wants 10-year NPFL goal record broken

Must Read

Current all-time highest goal scorer in the Nigeria Premier Football League, Mfon Udoh, has again stated his desire to see his 23-goal record, which he set in 2014, broken this season, reports.

Udoh won the NPFL Golden Boot and cemented his name in the history of the league with an unprecedented 23-goal while playing for Enyimba, smashing Jude Aneke’s 20-goal record.

Ten years after setting the record, he believes the current leading scorers in the league this season might be able to set a new record.

Remo Stars striker, Sikiru Alimi has scored 11 goals this season in 16 games while Bayelsa United forward, Robert Mizo, who has been running a neck-and-neck race with Alimi is also on 10 goals. Breathing down the neck of both players is Plateau United’s Albert Hilary with seven goals.

“Records will be broken, but one thing that will never be broken is being the first to do something. I wish everyone success in the goal scoring race,” Udoh posted after Alimi scored his 11th goal of the season.

Udoh, who currently plays for Bangladesh Premier League side Bashundhara Kings recently reflected on his record-breaking season while featuring on a podcast.

“Now that record will be 10 years old in 2024, breaking a record that has been there for so long and setting a new one will be amazing,” Udoh said on Abu Azeez Podcast.

“I want them to break it so that there will be competition. There have been so many guys that would have done that but the league was interrupted.”

Since 2014, Sporting Lagos striker, Junior Lokosa, and former Lobi Stars striker, Anthony Okputu, have been the closest to smashing Udoh’s record.

While playing for Kano Pillars in 2018, Lokosa had 19 goals but the league was interrupted and never continued after match-day 24 while Okputu emerged highest goal scorer in 2017 with 19 goals as
well.
