Former United States President Donald Trump was the second most searched topic on Google in 2023, trailing only pop superstar Taylor Swift but beating out news events like the Ukraine war and President Joe Biden, according to an analysis by Axios.
Trump’s criminal arraignments in New York and Georgia both made the top five list of most-searched news moments this year.
“Donald Trump was the only person or topic to make the top 5 both for the biggest moment and most consistent interest in 2023,” the analysis said.
The conflict in Ukraine ranked third in terms of sustained searches throughout 2023.
“Ukraine has struggled to continue its fight against Russian aggression, while U.S. support has faced more skepticism from Republicans,” the report noted.
But Swift stole the show in 2023, between her record-breaking Eras tour and her blossoming romance with NFL star Travis Kelce which has brought football to new audiences.
Trump’s ability to dominate headlines, for better or worse, remains unmatched, analysts say. As Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis put it:
“It’s both that but then it also … just crowded out, I think, so much other stuff, and it sucked out a lot of oxygen.”
Yet Swift took the crown as the celebrity with the most search interest this year, culminating in her being named Time’s Person of the Year for the second time.
