One dies, eight injured in Anambra road crash

One person died and eight others injured in an accident that occured at Ukpo Junction, along the Onitsha-Nteje-Awka Expressway.

The road crash involving two vehicles, a commercial Toyota/Hiace bus with Registration number JRV 616 XA and another commercial Toyota/Hiace bus with registration number JJJ 179 XS, occurred late on Wednesday.

The vehicles were carrying 14 persons comprising four male adults and six female adults, including a male child and three female children. Five persons escaped unhurt.

According to an eyewitness, one of the tyres of the bus with registration number JRV 616 XA pulled while in motion and it resulted in a collision with the incoming bus.

The Acting Sector Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the accident in a statement on behalf of the Anambra State Sector Commander, Adeoye Irelewuyi.

Onabe said the crash victims were rushed to Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka where the doctor confirmed one person dead on arrival before depositing him to their mortuary.

She added that others were taking treatment after reaching first aid from the nurse detailed at FRSC help area, Nteje.

“The Sector Commander Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, commiserated with the family of the dead victim, and sent his prayers to the injured persons.

“He warned motorists to desist from excessive speed and wrongful overtaken, especially this festive period that the road is very busy. Drive to save lives on our roads,” she added.
