Ogun community laments two-year blackout

Must Read

Residents of Olorunsogo in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State have bemoaned the blackout being experienced in the community.

Our correspondent who visited the area on Wednesday learnt that the two-year blackout is posing a security challenge to residents.

The chairman of the area’s Community Development Association, Kazeem Seye, said residents were relocating from the community daily.

Kazeem said, “Only God can help us in Olorunsogo. We do not have light for over two years. Some people have left the area due to the electricity problem.

“The state of the power supply has affected many businesses in the community. The community is currently left with only a few businesses and it is a setback for residents.”

He added that before the current prolonged blackout, the community had never experienced a stable power supply.

A resident, Abiodun Omolola, said, “We have over 40 communities in Owode. There is no power supply. When it is 7pm, everywhere becomes dark and it serves as a threat to the residents in Olorunsogo and Owode as a whole.

“Owode has been abandoned. We call on the government to please help us on this issue.”

A trader, Azeez Ayinla, said the blackout has negatively impacted the growth of businesses in the community.

“We have lost a lot of customers because our customers tend to use other shops that have good power supply in other communities and sometimes we lack fuel,” Ayinla said.

All efforts to get the reaction of the spokesperson for the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, Busolami Tunwase, proved abortive as calls made and messages sent to her mobile were not responded to as of the time of filing this report on Wednesday.
