Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, yesterday, lamented the sorry state of Niger Delta, saying the region is currently considered the most polluted in the world due to the high amount of spills.

The governor, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Monday Onyeme, at the 6th Meeting of the National Council on Niger Delta (NCND) in Asana, said that the region has experienced a series of devastating oil spills primarily caused by industrial activities related to the extraction and transportation of oil and gas.

He said: “These oil spills have caused severe and continuous damage to the delicate balance of the region’s ecosystems. They affect both the environment and the livelihoods of communities that depend on its resources.”

MEANWHILE, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission  (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has assured that the commission under his watch will never play politics with the development of the region, like in the past when politicians allegedly used their antics to destabilise the primary functions of the commission.

This is as stakeholders, including the Niger Opinion Leaders, Youth and Weighted Stakeholders, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), among others, in separate fora, charged the NDDC boss to remain focused on the rebirth of a functional commission.

The NDDC boss further urged Niger Deltans not to allow politicians to destabilise the commission, as such would impede development and sow seeds of discord among them.
