Nurses decry insecurity in Kaduna hospitals

Must Read

The Chairman, National Association of Nurses and Midwives, Kaduna State chapter, Ishaku Yakubu, has lamented the level of insecurity and poor nature of most government hospitals in the state.

Speaking on Wednesday during its first Zonal Scientific Workshop tagged, ‘Our Nurses, Our Future,’ held in Kaduna, Ishaku appealed to the state government to improve the security situation in some Local Government Areas in the state.

He explained that some LGAs are difficult to penetrate due to banditry activities, which therefore, has made it impossible for health workers to have access to health facilities.

He added that health workers are always afraid to go to such areas.

Ishaku said further, “Imagine someone that was supposed to provide care and is afraid, how can he provide quality health care service.

“Nurses are the critical engine of the health care system and the bedrock of any hospital in Nigeria.”

He also noted that some hospitals don’t have perimeter fences.

According to him, General hospital, Doka; Rural hospital, Kauru: General hospital, Gwantu and Rural Hospital, Zonkwa, don’t have perimeter fences and as such, the environment becomes porous and marauders can come in easily to attack and leave.

“Some of the hospitals don’t even have gates, talk more of security guards. These are some of the challenges we are facing.

“We are calling on the government to provide security, build perimeter fences and provide essential equipment that our health workers will use to work,” Ishaku stated.

He urged the state government to implement the 100 per cent CONHESS for all the health workers in the state, noting that they’ve started with medical doctors already.
