The Kano Command of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps (NCDC) has trained 62 female officers for safe school initiatives and other special assignments that require the intervention of female squads.

Mohammed Lawal Falala, the state commandant, stated this while receiving the leadership of Kano State Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), who paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday.

He said out of the 62 female officers, 30 would be posted to guard female schools while 32 would remain on standby for other special assignments that require the services of female officers.

According to him, the Command came up with such an initiative considering the fact that male officers would not be able to penetrate all nooks and crannies of the state due to the peculiar nature of Kano as a Sharia’ah-compliant state.

However, he appealed for more postings of female officers to Kano, adding that “Kano is big in terms of population and landmass.

“We have a shortage of female officers here. We are requesting the posting of more female officers to Kano to enable us to adequately combat crime and criminal activities.”

Furthermore, he stated that the trained female officers would operate as special squads to identify and arrest female suspects in their hideouts.

“They will appear in blue uniforms.” Their dressing will change right from head to toe.”

Also, the Commandant revealed that his men and officers sealed off five private security guard outlets that were operating illegally.

“Shortly after assuming office two months ago, we recorded the arrest of 19 suspects for different offences, out of whom 10 have already been prosecuted and sent to prison.”

“I must tell you that since I assumed duty as the Commandant in Kano, phone snatching has drastically reduced in the state.”

“I have paid courtesy visits to all the sister-security agencies in the state, and I assure you that we are working in synergy to protect lives and property across the state.”

In his remarks, the chairman of Kano NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Aminu Garko, commended the Commandant and his officers for the role they are playing in combating crime and criminal activities across the state.

“We are here to partner with you in the area of information dissemination. We have been taking note of the roles you are playing, particularly in the area of phone-snatching. We also commend you for the role you played during the last general elections in the state.

“However, we believe you still need to do more, particularly in the markets, where motorcycle theft, among other crimes, has become the order of the day,” Garko added.
