Nigerian striker in critical state after car crash

Must Read

Dapo Mebude has been rushed to hospital after a horror car crash, with concerning reports coming out of Belgium concerning the 22-year-old.

Mebude, who came through the Glasgow side’s academy before making his senior debut as a teenager, is on the books of Belgian side Oostende. According to Belgian outlet GVA, the injuries suffered by the footballer are life-threatening.

The winger, born in London, spent several years on Rangers’ books before making his debut during Steven Gerrard’s time in charge at Ibrox. He left for Watford in 2021 and made the switch to Oostende the following year.

According to GVA’s report, Mebude was freed by the fire brigade following the incident, which saw a car crash into a tree. The youngster is said to have been taken to hospital in the Bruges area, which is not said to have involved any other vehicles.

“The practice match between Knokke and KVO was canceled due to a car accident by player Dapo Mebude,” a statement from Mebude’s club read. “He was taken to hospital but there is no further information about his situation. Our thoughts are with Dapo and his family.”

Some fans responded with prayer emojis after Oostende posted their statement on social media, as did fellow Belgian club Beveren. “Hope you are okay and thinking of you Dapo,” another response read.

Multiple social media accounts with Rangers badges as their avatars also sent their well-wishes. One Rangers podcast, meanwhile, shared the message from Oostende and said they were “Wishing Dapo a full recovery”.

Mebude, who has been capped by Scotland up to Under-21 level, made five top-flight appearances last season as Oostende were relegated. He has played twice this term, with the second of those outings coming in September, and was an unused substitute for a cup tie at the end of October.

Former Rangers boss Gerrard, now at Al-Ettifaq, hailed Mebude’s potential when handing him a senior bow back in 2019. Mebude himself recognised the significance of the comments and pledged to move forward.
