The Nigeria Customs Service, Murtala Muhammad International Airport Command, said it collected N90.4bn in 2023 from duty and other charges.
According to a statement on Wednesday, the command’s Area Controller, Muhammad Yusuf, said this while addressing journalists at the command in Lagos.
However, Yusuf disclosed that the command had been assigned N144bn as a revenue target for 2024.
Yusuf was deployed to head the MMIA Command of the service a few months ago after serving as the coordinator of the defunct CGC Strike Force.
Speaking further on the achievements for 2023, he explained that when compared with what the command got in the previous year, “it showed a progressive difference of N20.66 billion, depicting 29.61 per cent increase of collection,”
He added that the achievement was made possible due to determination by officers of the command.
He said, “During the period under review, January to December 2023, officers and men of the command had not rested on their oars in enforcing government fiscal policies and other trade guidelines.
“The command made a total of 10 seizures and the items included, tramadol, military camouflage jackets, military hard wares, counterfeit medicaments, dried shark fins and dried donkey genitals.”
He said the items with duty paid value of N47.2bn were seized because of various forms of infractions.
“The infractions range from false declarations, non-compliance with the estimated threshold and failure to comply with other extant regulations as enshrined in the Nigeria Customs Service Act,” he said.
He pointed out that most of the relevant items had been handed over to concerned sister agencies in the spirit of inter-agency collaboration.
Yusuf said the command had maintained an open-door policy and resolved a lot of issues of common interest with concerned stakeholders.
