The Kano Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) have impounded 100 faulty vehicles in the last six months, including two vehicles owned by its staff.

The Kano VIO Director of Road Traffic Department, Hassan Garba, told the leadership of Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), during a courtesy call to his office.

He said the vehicles impounded were both commercial and private, but said commercial vehicles were higher in number.

“We are also making sure that the vehicles we arrest are put in good shape before releasing them. What we do is that when we arrest vehicles, we send them for inspection test; and ensure that all the faults are fixed before releasing them,” he said.

He also said that the VIO generated N14, 162, 000 between January and June, 2023, even though it targeted a revenue generation of N150 million for the year, 2023.

Garba, however, decried the shortfall in revenue generation, blaming it on hitches experienced through the consultants in the Board of Internal Revenue.

According to him, “we were not able to meet our revenue generation target due to some hitches occasioned by consultants in the Board of Internal Revenue

“But we expect to generate more revenue now that the administration of His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf has called-off the services of the consultants.”

According to him, Kano VIO has concluded plans to computerize revenue collection so as to avoid leakages, and boost revenue generation.

In his remarks, the chairman of Kano Correspondents’ Chapel, Alhaji Aminu Garko, urged the VIO to redouble efforts in its duty of removing faulty vehicles from the roads.

He also tasked the Kano VIO to remain patriotic while carrying out their responsibilities, promising that working journalists in the state would continue to support and partner with them in information dissemination.
