Intervene in Kano political crisis, forum tells Tinubu

Must Read

The Coalition of Arewa Forums in the South-West zone has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing political crisis in Kano State.

They made the call during a peaceful protest they staged in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

The PUNCH reports that the Court of Appeal affirmed the judgment of the Kano State Election Petition Tribunal, which overturned the victory of Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party as duly elected by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Members of the coalition, who staged a protest at the Cultural Centre Mokola in Ibadan, on Wednesday, carried placards with different inscriptions such as, “Abbah is our choice,” “Justice for Kano,” “Justice for Kano Movement,” “Say no to injustice,” among others.

One of the leaders of the coalition, Abba Yusuf, urged the President to intervene.

Yusuf, the Vice-Chairman of the forum in Oyo State said, “The information reaching us daily is alarming. Our people in the various states in the North are mostly of the view that this government is working to suppress the North. We want to call on the President to prove them wrong by allowing the will of the people and electorates to prevail in Kano.

“This is clear from the election cases in Plateau, Zamfara, and Kano. As we all know, these three states are volatile. The perceived daylight robbery and truncation of the will of the people through the courts might not be accepted by the people. We, therefore, call on the President to call to order judges handling election cases in the state.”

Also speaking, another leader, Aisha Ismail, said, “Obviously, a degeneration of this situation will impact on us directly as Arewas in the South-West. If the North erupts due to the hijacking of the people’s mandate by the All Progressives Congress through the courts and Yorubas bear the brunt of it, then we, as Northerners, will not be safe in Yorubaland either.”
