A police inspector has been shot dead in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, following an attack at a checkpoint by gunmen.

Our correspondent gathered that the attack happened on Monday night at the popular Union Bank Roundabout, very close to the Headquarters of the Ebonyi State Police Command.

The gunmen reportedly opened fire at the checkpoint, killing an Inspector instantly.

The gunmen also injured two other police officers, who sustained varying degrees of bullet wounds.

The injured officers have been receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital, in the Abakaliki metropolis.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident, adding two operatives of the Command sustained several injuries and were receiving treatment in a hospital.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said this in a statement, on Tuesday night.

The statement read, “On the 22/05/2023 at about 2030 hrs, the Operatives of the Command on Stop and Search duty at Union Bank roundabout, the area where banks are concentrated in the State Capital, engaged in a shootout with heavily armed hoodlums, whose mission were unknown in the area.

“Sadly, one of the Operatives paid the supreme price, while two others were injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital. Also, the hoodlums equally recorded casualties but were taken away.

“The Commissioner of Police, therefore, appeals to members of the public to report anyone seen with a bullet wound or soliciting for treatment for the same.”
