The leadership of the Contributory Pensioners in Osun State has said members of the group would embark on a protest at the end of the two-week ultimatum given to the governor, Ademola Adeleke, to release their bond certificates and pay arrears of half salaries owed them.
In a radio interview monitored in Osogbo on Monday, the Chairman of the Contributory Pensioners in the state, Mr. Gbenga Oyadare, said the group, in a letter written to the governor on September 18, urged him to release the bond certificates of the pensioners.
Oyedare said, “The contributory pensioners are planning to protest. It is not a rumour. We have sent a document to that effect, which was submitted to the government on September 18, giving them a two-week ultimatum to attend to our demands.
“The pension debt the government owes us presently is over N50bn, and unless they quicken the payment, by 2026, I want to tell you, another six years will be pending, and we have already given the governor one year without asking for it. In two months, he will be in office for one year. We have been silent for a good 10 months.”
But the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Engagement, Kolapo Alimi, said the government was ready to dialogue with the pensioners to find an amicable solution to the challenge.
He said, “Our governor is passionate about the issue of pensions. That is why I said, Let us meet today, and after today we will be able to bring a report to him.”
