Gombe NBA sets up committee to probe police assault on chair

Must Read

The Nigerian Bar Association, Gombe State branch has inaugurated a seven-member committee to investigate an allegation of assault on its chairman, Benjamin Sati, by an Inspector of Police, Kabiru Ibrahim.

On Wednesday,  Sati had alleged that Ibrahim called him stupid for parking in the wrong space

Announcing the resolution of the branch after its emergency congress on Friday, the secretary,  Abdumutalib Babawuro, said the committee has one week to round off its terms of reference and submit recommendations.

He disclosed that the committee has eminent personalities expected to do justice to the matter.

He said, “We are just coming out from an emergency meeting and the Congress has unanimously resolved that we should constitute a committee. A committee of seven members to go and look into the matter and come back to the members in our next meeting.

“The committee is constituted of respected members of the bar who will do justice to the matter.”

While stating the branch’s expectations, he also harped on the need for members to reciprocate the confidence reposed in the committee in ensuring that justice is done.

“We expect them as well-respected and senior members of the bar to go and engage all stakeholders and report back to the house. We gave them seven days as agreed by the congress,” he added.

Earlier, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, Commissioner of Police Oqua Etim, expressed displeasure over Sati’s claims, saying that he was a bank customer who needed to allow the issues to be dealt with in-house without involving the media.

“He (Sati) went to the bank as a customer and not as an NBA chairman as such he should have obeyed the instruction of the officers on the ground.

“If there is a problem between an employee in the bank and a customer, who do you report to? The manager? How does press come into it?”
