A popular filmmaker, Emem Isong-Misodi, has stated that filmmakers are deviating from telling authentic stories. She also expressed concern about the industry’s shift from authentic storytelling, not only within the realm of African narratives but in the broader context of storytelling.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, she said, “I am of the opinion that story is everything. We (filmmakers) are deviating from the authentic stories we used to tell, not just African stories but telling stories properly the way they need to be told.
“We are concentrating more on the technical aspect, which is a good thing that has greatly improved. As a filmmaker, even if it’s a small amount of money I make, I am very particular about my stories.”
Speaking on some of the challenges she faced when she started her career as a filmmaker, Isong-Misodi said, “Funding was a challenge then and there were very few women too (who were filmmakers). Most of the women wanted to be in front of the camera, unlike now that a woman can decide to be at the helm of affairs.”
