FG hands off payment of salary of new Super Eagles coach

Must Read

The Federal Government has hands off payment of the salary of the new Super Eagles coach.

According to a top official, the Federal Government has made it very clear to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that it won’t pay the salaries of the new coach of the Super Eagles.

“The Federal Government will not pay the new coach of the Super Eagles, that’s the responsibility of the NFF,” one top official told SCORENigeria

“This position will therefore go a long way in determining who is eventually hired to lead the Super Eagles.”

The previous sports minister Sunday Dare had given a firm commitment that the FGN will foot the bills of Jose Peseiro when he was appointed in 2022.

However, this did not happen and it was left for the NFF to eventually pay the Portuguese coach and when that was not sustainable, the football federation ran back to Government to clear the unpaid salaries of the coach.

At a point, Peseiro had to take a huge pay cut from $70,000 a month to $50,000 on account of the difficulties the NFF encountered in paying him regularly.

The previous NFF administration also reportedly secured a corporate sponsor to pay the salaries of the Super Eagles coach as well as other national team coaches.

That arrangement has since ceased to exist.
