The Federal Government has granted West Midlands Open University, a new online university, a license to offer degrees in Nigeria.

In a statement, the university announced that it has received licensing and formal approval from the National University Commission to offer degree-granting programmes online in Nigeria.

“This approval creates exciting new opportunities for the new university to offer its diverse range of accredited programmes globally,” it stated.

It explained that online education had become an essential tool in today’s rapidly changing world and the West Midlands group was not a newcomer to the edutech industry.

According to the statement, the university has already invested in a CBT centre where over 1 million students have taken both local and international online-based examinations.

“WMOU will be leading the way in making top-notch education accessible via the internet,” it further said.

The founder of West Midlands Open University, High Chief Adebayo Akande, said, “The University plans to catalyse national development and global competitiveness by utilising sustainable technologies and high-quality programs to provide training and education to learners.”

He added that the university’s programmes were designed to meet the needs of working professionals and students who want to advance their careers.

The statement stated that WMOU would offer a comprehensive range of high-quality programmes, including undergraduate programmes and short learning programme certification courses all of which will be delivered online.

“This makes it possible for students to learn from anywhere in the world, regardless of their location or circumstances.

“All programmes would be developed by academic experts with a focus on providing practical and relevant knowledge and skills that meet the demands of the modern global workforce,” the statement said.
