Embrace vocational skills, NYSC DG urges corps members

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed, has urged corps members in the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream One, currently undergoing their orientation exercise, to embrace and acquire vocational skills through the Scheme’s Skill Acquisition and Development programme.

Ahmed gave the advice during his address to corps members at the Katsina and Borno States NYSC Permanent Orientation Camps.

In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the NYSC, Eddy Megwa, on Monday, the DG told the corps members that the in-camp training was designed to expose them to entrepreneurship skills during their three-week Orientation period, while the post-camp training period would help them to fully perfect their skills towards self-employment.

While stressing that skill acquisition was the only antidote to unemployment, he urged the corps members to take advantage of the Scheme’s Skill Acquisition and Development programme to develop their potential and be financially independent.

The DG also warned the corps members not to violate the dress code of the NYSC adding, “The era of wrong dressing is gone. You must always dress well, don’t dress anyhow because every wrong dress attracts sanctions and if you are wrongly dressed, you would not be allowed to enter our offices”.

General Ahmed also urged them to fully participate in all camp activities and use the four cardinal programs of the Scheme, namely, the Orientation Course, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service and Winding-Up/Passing-Out to create friendships and use them as avenues to impact their host communities.

Meanwhile, while briefing the Director General, the NYSC Katsina State Coordinator, Mrs Aisha Muhammad, disclosed that the 1,129 registered corps members, comprising 551 males and 578 females, had adjusted to their new environment.

In the same vein, the State Coordinator for Borno State, Mr Mohammed Jiya, told the DG that the orientation camp activities were going on seamlessly and that there was teamwork among the camp officials.
