No fewer than 12 people were feared killed in an auto crash that happened at Ngido village along Katsina-Ala-Zaki Biam Road, Benue State on Wednesday.

An eyewitness said the accident happened around 12:32 pm involving two vehicles.

The eyewitness claimed that one of the drivers of the vehicle who was speeding tried to avoid a pothole and in the process rammed into an on-coming vehicle which also was on speed.

The eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “One of the drivers tried to dodge a pothole but had a head-on collision with oncoming vehicle.

“12 people were killed in the accident. The Golf vehicle (for commercial) had nine passengers and the Nissan car (private) had three people.

“The four who sustained various degrees of injuries and were conveyed to the hospital have died.

But confirming the accident to journalists in Makurdi on Wednesday, the Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, Steve Ayodele, said eight people were killed in the crash.

He said, “It was a multiple accident involving two vehicles and it was fatal. 10 persons involved – four female adults, one male adult and one female child.

“Out of the 10, eight people died.  Two persons were injured and were taken to Kastina-Ala General Hospital for medical attention.

“It was a head-on collision; one of the vehicles was trying to avoid a pothole and ram into an oncoming vehicle. I guess it was as a result of speeding otherwise they would have been able to manoeuvre their way.”
