Cross River elections tribunal chair promises fairness

The chairman of the Cross River State Elections Petitions Tribunal, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi, says the panel will be fair to all the parties.

He gave the assurance on Wednesday in Calabar at the panel’s inaugural sitting. At the inaugural sitting with Justice Adeniyi were Justice Z. U. Modibbo (Member 1) and Justice Eva Okoronkwo (Member 11).

According to Justice Adeniyi, “The tribunal is not a battle ground and we shall proceed seamlessly and without delay.

“We shall discharge our duties to the best of our abilities and always remain mindful of the oath we took.

“We assure all litigants of a fair trial and we will not entertain any form of interference from any quarter and shall report any attempt to interfere with the tribunal to the security agencies,” adding that the tribunal was time-conscious and urged all to cooperate to successfully perform the task.

Murtala Abdul-Rasheed, SAN, who also spoke, said the Nigerian public and the international community would watch how the tribunal carries out the task before it

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Calabar Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, Attah Ochinke, assured the tribunal that members of the association would exhibit professional candour during the tribunal’s sittings.
