Speaking at the 5th anniversary of the Deaf Women Aloud Initiative (DWAI) held in Abuja on October 31, 2023, Executive Director of FAME Foundation, Arabinrin Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello stressed how important it is to address the challenges faced by people living with disabilities, especially those with hearing impairments,

She said, “In our society, there exists a crucial need for a transformative change, individuals with disabilities, especially women and girls with hearing impairment, are entitled to accessing healthcare services and information, equal opportunities, and supportive policies that allow them not just to exist but to flourish, fostering a culture of genuine inclusion, the time has come for us all to address the challenges faced by persons with disability.”

She emphasised the importance of inclusion in education, saying, “there is a need for the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), Federal Ministry of Education, and other stakeholders, to consider how schools can implement programs/ curriculum that allow deaf students to attend regular classes alongside their peers while using sign language interpreters to ensure effective communication. This should also be extended to places of worship and workplaces, there is a need for everyone to embrace inclusivity.”

Arabinrin Aderonke continued by saying, “Creating an inclusive environment extends beyond physical accommodations; it means actively involving and valuing the participation of individuals with disabilities in all spheres of life, it’s about fostering an atmosphere where these individuals not only have access but are actively engaged, contributing meaningfully to the community.”

She further urged stakeholders, government officials, and CSOs, to support organisations advocating for people living with disabilities, and ensure that they are not left behind and are fully integrated and valued in every aspect of societal life.
