The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has urged parents and community leaders to break the “culture of silence” to enable the law to take its course on perpetrators of domestic and sexual violence.
The agency also urged children “to learn to call their private parts by their original names and never to hesitate or delay to speak up when they experience any form of abuse from any trusted adult.”
The agency, which took advocacy on Sexual and Gender-based Violence to some communities in Lagos, said it was important to sensitise children and other stakeholders to issues bordering on the SGBV.
The Executive Secretary, DSVA, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, said among the various celebrations the agency was involved in, it was expedient to also to take the Children’s Day celebration to the various communities.
This, according to her, led to the initiative to celebrate, advocate and educate children in some communities in the state.
“The DSVA officers took the children and adults present through prevention tips, also enlightened the participants on channels of the report, creating adequate time for their children, and never leaving their child in the care of anyone.
“Parents and community leaders were charged to break the ‘culture of silence’ to enable the law to take its course so that perpetrators will be brought to the book, stressing that this will serve as a deterrence for others,” ” a statement by the agency said.
