Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has congratulated the management of PUNCH Newspaper for sustaining the legacy of its founder, Chief James Aboderin.

Obasanjo stated this at the black-tie dinner of PUNCH Newspapers, commemorating its 50th anniversary at the Eko Hotel and Suite, Victoria Island, Lagos on Saturday.

Obasanjo who urged the management to continue to keep the flag flying, stated that Aboderin’s objectives of establishing PUNCH Newspaper have been achieved.

He said, “Let me congratulate you. Those of you who have kept the flag flying since the demise of my good friend and good colleague, Olu Aboderin.

“His objective has been fulfilled. I want to urge those of you after him to keep the flag flying.

“PUNCH has existed for 50 years, and PUNCH will continue to exist for the next 50 years and beyond.”

Speaking further on his relationship with the PUNCH founder, Obasanjo said Aboderin, during his days as an accountant, brought an end to banking challenges they had while he (Obasanjo) was the General Officer Commanding the Third Marine Commando several years ago.

He said, “My path and Olu’s path crossed when he was the Chief Accountant of National Bank and particularly when I was the GOC Third Marine Commando.

“My predecessor then, his bedroom was his bank but when Olu came with the idea of banking to us our problem of banking was solved.”
