The Rivers State Police Command on Friday confirmed fatality in a land dispute in Akpano community in Eleme Local Government Area of the state.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the state Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying only one person died in the incident.
Although the cause of the incident is still sketchy, it was gathered that two groups within the community were involved in the brawl which resulted in a shooting.
Meanwhile, a source in the community who spoke on condition of anonymity said the crisis was caused by suspected land grabbers and this led to the death of two persons.
He stated, “This afternoon, some land grabbers invaded Akpano and started claiming land that doesn’t belong to them and it caused shooting.
“Some people have left the community to safer areas. As we speak, two people have been killed. A team of policemen even came.”
Iringe-Koko, however, stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has ordered the deployment of tactical teams to the area, adding that calm has returned.
“The command is aware of the situation. One person died and a full-scale investigation has commenced.
“Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu has deployed tactical teams to the area and normalcy has been restored.
“As a matter of fact, people are going about their lawful businesses and activities in the area.”
