Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactical Team, SWAT of the Nigeria Police Force, at Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos Island, Lagos, Southwest, Nigeria have arrested a driver with the Dynamic Bright Limited, Okota, Isolo, Lagos, Danladi Sumai Maude, 33, and charged him before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing his employer’s 2014 Model ML 350 Mercedes Benz valued at N15,000,000 and selling it off for N9m and escaped.

Also charged with the driver was the alleged receiver and buyer of the Benz for N9m, Kingsley Davidson, 34, a resident of VGC Estate, Ajah, Lagos who the Police claimed knew full well that the Benz was stolen.

Police alleged that trouble started for the duo in October 2022 when the complainant, Chief Dennis Akano sent his driver, Danladi Sumai Maude on an errand with the Benz with the original papers of the SUV with Registration No FKJ 232 HR.

Police further alleged that instead of the driver going for the errand, he absconded with the Benz to Plateau State, Jos to sell the SUV to the second defendant, Kingsley Davidson for N9m and fled.

Police alleged that following the development, the complainant petitioned the Inspector General of Police, IGP, who referred the case to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP in charge of operations at the SWAT Command, Adeniji Adele Road, Lagos, DCP Ogedengbe for proper Investigation.

Following the IGP’s directives, DCP Ogedengbe gave a marching order to his crack team led by Ogundeji Caleb to fish out the fleeing driver anywhere he might be hiding.

The Police team tracked the driver to Plateau State, arrested him, and brought him back to Lagos.

During investigation, the driver allegedly confessed to stealing the Benz and selling it to Davidson in Jos and the Police succeeded in arresting the buyer in Plateau State in 2023 after several months of manhunt.

But Davidson allegedly denied knowing that the Benz was stolen.

The defendants were charged before the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

Police Prosecuting Counsel, Reuben Solomon who stood in for CSP Charles Onwumere informed the Court that the defendants committed the offence in October 2022 at Dynamic Bright Limited, Okota Isolo, Lagos.

Solomon told the Court that the complainant sent his driver, Maude, the first defendant on an errand with his Benz, but instead the driver drove the Benz to Plateau State, Jos to sell it to the second defendant for N9m and fled before they were arrested through tracking.

He said the offences, the defendants committed were punishable under sessions 411 and 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate, Mr O.S Abioye granted the first defendant bail in the sum of N2m and the second defendant N5m with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case.
