Stakeholders kick against Peseiro contract renewal

Must Read

Football stakeholders in the country have called on the Nigeria Football Federation not to extend the contract of Jose Peseiro, following the Super Eagles’ underwhelming performance under the Portuguese coach in his first year in charge of the team, The PUNCH reports.

Last year, the NFF announced the appointment of Peseiro as the new coach of the Eagles replacing Austin Eguavoen, who returned to his Technical Director role at the federation after he acted in an interim role with the team during the delayed 2022 African Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon.

The Portuguese coach reportedly earns $70,000 per month.

In eight games in charge of the Eagles, Peseiro has managed to lead the team to three wins and five defeats with the team scoring 15 goals and conceding 11 goals.

The former Venezuelan national team coach has also recorded 1.13 points per game.

Under his reign, the Eagles have recorded unwanted records in the game with the latest being their most embarrassing defeat in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Abuja on March 24, 2023.

The Eagles slumped to a shock 1-0 defeat at home to 118th-ranked Guinea-Bissau.

Prior to that shock defeat, the three-time Africa champions failed to win a game in three straight games for the first time in three decades. They had lost to Algeria (2-1), Portugal (4-0) and Guinea Bissau 1-0.

These defeats have got stakeholders and the team’s fans not believing his capabilities again.

Former Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Olympic Committee, Femi Adetula queried why the Portuguese should be handed a new deal.

“Why,” Adetula responded.

“What has he done to warrant the extension but then again it is what it is.”

“He should not continue as coach of the Eagles. He should just go away,” journalist Afolabi Gambari stated.

“He is clueless and not desirable of the Eagles. Some of my Portuguese friends who are sports journalists do mock me and Nigeria when we discuss why we had to settle for a coach of his calibre.”

Ace sports broadcaster, Temisan Okomi, tasked the NFF to find a suitable replacement as his technical abilities are in doubt.

“Peseiro has not worked for us and we need to find another coach fast like I said earlier. He is not working for us. Peseiro is absolutely not useful as a coach to us and now that his contract is going to lapse I think we need to let him go fast.”

Football administrator Shuaib Gara-Gombe also added that his contract should not be renewed.

“The NFF should not consider giving him (Peseiro) another contract,” Gara-Gombe said. We have given so much to him but we are getting less. The NFF shouldn’t wait until he does more damage.”

Sacking Peseiro or allowing him to stay on the job, which ends May 15 (today), is a huge decision the NFF must take.
