Real Madrid win Spanish Super Cup

Real Madrid beat title-holders Athletic Club 2-0 on Sunday to win the 38th edition of the Supercopa.

Goals from Luka Modric, in the 37th minute, and Karim Benzema, from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute, gave Real Madrid the win, as Athletic Club failed to produce a comeback.

Real’s Militāo was shown a red card after a handball which blocked a Raul Garcia’s header headed into the goal net. Garcia’s penalty kick, however, was saved by Thibaut Courtois.

In the game played at the King Fahd Stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Carlo Ancelotti fielded a Real Madrid side different from the one that beat FC Barcelona last Wednesday.

Dani Carvajal missed the match after testing positive for Covid-19, leading to Lucas Vazquez getting a call-up at right-back. Marco Asensio was absent due to a muscle problem sustained during the final training session. Asensio was replaced by Rodrygo in attack.

Athletic Club coach Marcelino Toral started the same line-up that beat Atletico Madrid last Thursday.

Since the 2019-20 season, the Spanish Super Cup has been contested by 4 teams: the winners and runners-up of the Copa del Rey and La Liga.

In this year’s edition, Los Blancos knocked out FC Barcelona in the semifinals last Wednesday, thanks to a last-gasp goal by Federico Valverde which ended the game at 3-2.

Meanwhile, Los Leones came back from a goal down to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 in their Thursday semifinal match, with Nico Williams scoring the winner.

Sunday’s final marked the first time that both teams played against each other in a final since the 1958 Copa del Rey final (then called the Copa del Generalisimo), which Athletic Club won 2-0.

Real Madrid and Athletic Club entered into Sunday’s final as the second and third most successful clubs respectively in the competition’s 40-year history. Real now have 12 Super Cup titles, while Basque-based Athletic Club have 3 titles.

Athletic Club won the 2021 edition, beating FC Barcelona at Estadio de la Cartuja in Seville.

Real currently top the La Liga table and are five points clear of second-placed Sevilla. They are 21 points clear of Athletic Club, who are berthed in the ninth place.
