Police probe Imo magistrate’s court fire, documents destroyed

Must Read

Hoodlums on Sunday reportedly set ablaze a section of the Owerri Magistrate’s Court, Imo State.

This is coming barely 24 hours after the Orlu High Court was also burnt by suspected hoodlums.

The magistrate’s court, which is located at the heart of the state capital, was housing the Owerri High Court.

It was learnt that sensitive court materials and documents, including files, were burnt.

The source said, “Hoodlums razed part of the Owerri Magistrate’s Court on Owerri- Orlu Road. It happened today (Sunday). This is unfortunate.”

Our correspondent, who visited the scene on Sunday, observed that smokes were oozing out from parts of the court building that was burnt.

However, the police spokesperson for the command, Micheal Abattam, said the act was not committed by hoodlums.

He said, “It is suspected that the section got burnt because of a fault. The court buildings were not affected. The areas affected are a restaurant and a place where exhibits are kept. Investigations will reveal the actual thing that happened.”
