Police probe explosions at Rivers radio, TV stations

Must Read

The Rivers State Police Command said it had launched a full-scale investigation into an explosion that rocked two media outfits in the Ozuoba in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state on Tuesday night.

It added that a similar investigation had commenced into the alleged shooting in the residence of a member of the Social Democratic Party, Tony Bombs, who is seeking election into the House of Representatives.

Some gunmen had at about 8:45pm on Tuesday attacked the building housing the offices of Atlantic Television Network and Wish FM 99.5.

The attack was carried out  with explosives devices suspected to be dynamites.

It was gathered that the hoodlums shot sporadically and threw the device into the building, destroying a generator, a 500kva transformer and a transformer feeder panel.

It was also gathered that though no casualty was recorded, electronic appliances in both the radio and television stations were damaged.

When contacted, the chairman of the media outfits, who is a member of the House of Representatives, Dr Chinyere Igwe, confirmed the incident and called for a thorough investigation.

Igwe stated, “Well, what I am happy about is that no life was lost. We have made entry to the police and some detachment of the police came.

“They have even called me this (Wednesday) morning that a detachment of bomb experts were coming for further investigation and that we should not clear the debris.”

The second attack involving   Boms happened at about 10pm on Tuesday in the Agip axis Port Harcourt.

Speaking to newsmen about the incident,  Boms said he was in a meeting with some friends when it happened.

He stated, “When we tried to peep to see what was going on, hoodlums in a vehicle near my house were shooting and we had to take cover.

“They threw dynamite into my house. You can see the destruction. At the same time they shot somebody on the chest at the junction. I hear he is at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital now.

“Whoever they (assailants) were, they should know that we are humans and Nigerians. Whether they like it or not, this election will be contested and won.”

He said he had reported the matter to the police.

“The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, the Bomb unit and the DPO of Sanni Abacha were all here.

“Even this morning they were here. But they should sit up and provide security for every citizen of Rivers State and Nigeria.

“At the same time, they should put more focus on this territory because the state is in chaos right now. Who knows who will be next?

“It was only yesterday that my party gave me flag which is the authority to contest and bring victory to the party. The gunshot lasted for 15, 20 minutes,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, in a statement, said an investigation had been launched into the incident.

“Operatives of the Explosive Ordnance Department have been deployed to the scene for swift and detailed investigation with a view to ascertaining the veracity of the information and to unravel what exactly caused the explosion,” he said.
