The Osun State Police Command on Wednesday said four persons had been arrested in connection with a mayhem which occurred in the Ilesa area of the state and claimed some lives.
A statement by the command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, condemned the violent clash between two cult groups on Tuesday, saying apart from the four suspects in police custody, efforts were on to apprehend others linked to the crisis.
She further said normalcy had returned to the affected areas and appealed to parents and guardians to monitor their children and ensure that they did not get involved in any sort of criminal activities.
She also appealed to politicians in the state to rein in their supporters and stop them from engaging in violence.
It statement partly read, “Presently, four (4) suspects have been arrested in connection with the mayhem in Ilesa and its environs, while efforts is in top gear to arrest other perpetrators.
“The police appeal to parents/guardians to monitor their children/wards and prevent them from getting involved in any sort of criminal activities.”
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State have been trading blame over those that were killed in Ilesa and its environs on Tuesday.
The APC acting chairman in the state, Mr Tajudeen Lawal, in a statement, alleged that five of its members were killed by a notorious political thug loyal to a PDP candidate in the area.
Lawal alleged, “Prominent among the APC members killed in Ijesa land on Tuesday was Ibrahim Adebiyi a.k.a. ‘Omo Alhaja’. It was gathered that the daredevil thug, Bode Kayode a.k.a. ‘Bode Itapa’ shot Adebiyi at a close range at Ward 5 in Eti-Oni in the Atakumosa-East Local Government Council Area of Osun State on Tuesday, while ‘Bode Itapa’ was in the midst of the PDP members and thugs who embarked on a house-to-house campaign in the town yesterday.
“Four members of the APC were killed in Ilesa on Tuesday afternoon as booming of gunshots rented the air at the Bolorunduro area of the town when the PDP thugs who were on rampage were shooting indiscriminately.”
He charged the state police command to investigate the incidents with a view to arresting and prosecuting whoever might be directly or remotely connected to the acts.
But in a counter statement, the Osun State PDP acting chairman, Akindele Adekunle, condemned the killings of its members in Ilesa after a “successful campaign rally” was held in the local government on Tuesday.
“Just yesterday, after our successful campaign rally in Ilesha, the Osun APC unleashed their killer squad into the public and started shooting sporadically and targeting the PDP members who enthusiastically welcomed the campaign train of our party led by Senator Ademola Adeleke, the governor of the state.
“As a result of this devilish act from them, two members of our party (PDP) from the Ilesa West area were shot dead with the third one in coma. Those killed by the hired thugs of the APC on the orders of their party chieftains in the state are; Rafiu Quadri Abiodun and Elijah Baba Ewe, while the third victim, Gbenga Femi from Olorunsogo, is in a state of coma presently,” Adekunle alleged.
