The Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has pardoned and released 12 inmates on death row and also commuted the death sentences of six inmates to life imprisonment.

The Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Correctional Service, Kano Command, Musbahu K/Nassarawa, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement said Ganduje equally pardoned four female inmates with long-term sentences based on their good behaviour and as recommended by the correctional authority.

According to the statement, some of the pardoned inmates have spent 25 years awaiting execution.

‘’In his speech, the Chairman of the state Prerogative of Mercy, Abdullahi Garba Rano, thanked Ganduje for using the power conferred on him by the constitution to release the inmates with good behaviour at the recommendation of the advisory council of the prerogative of mercy.

‘’Ganduje also gave N5,000 transport fare to each of the released inmates to enable them to reunite with their respective families,” the statement said.

The Controller of Corrections in the state, Sulaiman Inuwa, thanked Ganduje for decongesting the custodial centre and called on the released inmates to be good ambassadors of the Nigerian Correctional Service in society and to stay away from any acts that can lead them back to crime.
