veteran singer, Zaaki Azzay, has advised young artistes to learn about the music business, using himself as an example.

He told “Once you are coming into the music industry, you need to read about the business of music. You need to know how the business side of the industry works. That’s why it is called show business. I lost a lot of money over the years.

“I keep saying this because I don’t want those coming behind me to make the same mistakes I made. I lost money for more than 10 years before I discovered there were a lot of royalties I was missing out on.

“It was MI Abaga in those days when we were living in Gbagada Estate with Ice Prince and Jesse Jagz, that educated me a bit about royalties, and online song streams.

“That was how I realised that I was losing a lot. Instead of them (young artistes) just waiting for shows and streaming of their songs, there are a lot of other avenues through which they can make money.”

Azzay, who is known for his trademark torchlight and cap, added that there were many things young artistes did not know about.

He said, “There is so much they (young artistes) don’t know. They need to learn how to sign contracts and know about the royalties that belong to them. They also need to learn how to protect their intellectual property.

“But, there is usually only one thing that rings in their head. They want to ‘blow’ (become popular). They just want to be known. And, that is not how it’s supposed to be.”
