I can succeed Onuachu –Dessers

Cyril Dessers

Cyriel Dessers says he will be able to fill in-form teammate Paul Onuachu boots if he leaves Belgian Pro League side Genk this summer.

Onuachu has courted interests across Europe after banging in 30 league goals in the 2020/21 season.

It was, however, Dessers who hit the ground running in the first league game of the season, scoring a stoppage time equaliser away at Standard Liege after coming on as a 62nd minute replacement for Onuachu.

Speaking after the match, the 26-year-old said he was ready to lift Genk in case Onuachu left the club.

“The release was great. And that is also due to the fact that there are supporters in the stadium again.

“Even if they are “enemy” supporters or they whistle us out for the entire match, that gives a very nice feeling with that equaliser,” Dessers said.

“That gives an extra emotion, especially if you can still take a point in the last minute against Standard. That is also a very good feeling with an assist.

“Paul had a fantastic season last season, everyone saw that.

“Whether he (Onuachu) will stay or not is the question for everyone, I also think for himself. All I can do is show in the minutes that I get, that I am ready when he leaves and that I can stand there.

“And I think I better show myself quickly, especially with the Champions League matches coming up. So, Genk also has the feeling that I’m there and they can give me the confidence.”
