From Abel Leonard, Lafia
Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state has said the 62nd anniversary of Nigeria nationhood calls for sober reflection considering the enormous challenges of insecurity, kidnapping, banditry, Boko Haram insurgency, dwindling economic fortunes and other sundry economic crimes bedeviling our country.
He said the the sorry state of affairs calls for collective concern and concerted efforts towards a holistic overhaul of our society.
“Let me, on behalf of the Government and people of Nasarawa State, congratulate all Nigerians on this occasion of the 62nd Anniversary of our nationhood. Today reminds us once again the agitation and patriotic favor which were the driving force towards the attainment of our freedom from the colonialists and the independence which we are enjoying today.”
Governor Sule made the call in his speech delivered on Saturday during the independence day ceremony organisers by the state government held at Lafia Square, Jos road Lafia the Nasarawa state capital.
He said “Today also marks the 26th anniversary celebration for the creation of Nasarawa State, adding that successive administrations have endeavoured to contribute their quotas towards the realization of the dream of the founding fathers.
“I stand today on the threshold of our enviable history and journey of progress and development, which through the oath we have taken in the last three (3) years, four (4) months, we have kept faith with.”
“The journey so far has been eventful and full of commemorative strides. It is, therefore, with a heart full of gratitude to Almighty God and a sense of fulfillment that I address you today on the twin occasion of the 62nd Anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence and the 26th Anniversary Celebration of the creation of Nasarawa State.”
However, he said there are still challenges, which we inherited, believing that development is a continuous process.
‘This is why when we assumed office, we endeavoured to make some strides through various policy interventions and programme initiative to propel development in various sectors of the State economy. ”
On security, the governor said security is the bedrock for harmonious co-existence and socio-economic development of the society.
“There is no doubt that our development partners can only key into the State’s development agenda in an atmosphere of peace and order. This is why we sustained our collaboration with security agencies and provided logistics support to ensure the protection of lives and property.”
“This is in addition to the provision of operational vehicles and motorcycles to enhance effective coverage and quick response to security threats. We have also facilitated the establishment of Military Super Camps at Kenyehu and Udege in Toto and Nasarawa Local Government Areas, as well as the 4 Special Forces in Doma, considered proned to security threats.”
“This Administration has also facilitated the establishment of the Mobile Police Training College in Nasarawa Eggon, as well as an additional Squadron in Toto. We have also domesticated Community Policing as veritable tool to control crimes and criminality in the society”. He added.
On the state of Nasarawa Economy, Sule recalled that when he took over the mantle of leadership in 2019, he made a solemn commitment to initiate and execute policies and programmes for the sustainable development of the State.
“In keeping to this covenant, this Administration launched the Nasarawa Economic Development Strategy (NEDS) document. This policy document defines our development blueprint. Through the policy, this Administration established the Nasarawa Investment Development Agency (NASIDA). We have also attracted investments from the Dangote Group of Company, Azman Rice Ltd., Flour Mills of Nig. Plc., among others.’
On the Health, Sule said his administration accorded priority to healthcare service delivery. Noting that it is the reason that it embarked on a State wide medical outreach on the treatment of Glaucoma and Cataract diseases, including surgery of different ailments, issuance of glasses and other medications to ensure that people afflicted by the diseases receive treatment free of charge.
” So far, we have scaled up the programme to nine (9) Local Government Areas of the State. I assure you that efforts will be intensified to ensure that medical outreaches are carried out in the remaining Local Government Areas before the end of this year. We will endeavour to provide affordable healthcare services and infrastructure at tertiary, secondary and primary levels for the wellbeing of the people of Nasarawa State.”
Gov. Sule re-emphasize that he would not celebrate the creation the State without paying tribute to those that sacrificed their time, resources and energy to ensure that Nasarawa State came to fruition. It was for this reason that, in 2021, his administration dedicated the Silver Jubilee celebration of the states creation in honour of founding fathers and immortalized some of his administrations projects after them.
Sule therefore reassured the good people of Nasarawa State that the oath he took to serve the people diligently, prudently, transparently and with the fear of God will continue to be the defining principles of his Administration.
“Happy celebration of Nasarawa at 26 and Nigeria at 62. I wish you a hitch-free celebration.”
