The Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission on Thursday announced that the state local government election has been scheduled for April 27, 2024.

Chairperson of the state electoral body, Saidu Awak, confirmed this in a meeting with political parties on Thursday, saying the meeting was a sequel to Governor Muhammadu Yahaya’s approval for the conduct of the poll across the 11 LGs.

The last time the LG election held in the state was in December 2020, when the ruling All Progressives Congress cleared the 11 LGA seats and councillorships across the 114 wards.

Awak said, “Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu  Yahaya, has approved that the State Independent Electoral Commission conduct elections in all the 11 local government areas of the state.

“We believe that all of you are fully aware of the serious economic problems, the acute fuel expense, and the security challenges facing our beloved country, Nigeria. Our Jewel in Savannah, Gombe State is not exempt from these hardships and challenges.

“For emphasis and clarity, we hereby state that the Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission, today the 18th of January 2024 gives the mandatory 101 days’ notice of poll to interested political parties who wish or want to participate in the local government  election scheduled to hold on the 27th of April, 2024.”

While assuring them of a smooth and transparent process, the GOSIEC boss urged political parties to conduct their business within the expectation of the law, adding “At this juncture, we wish to call on all Political Parties to ensure that they conduct their primaries within the time frame that will be given to them.

“We also wish to call on the leadership of all the political parties that intend to contest in this election to impress on their members and supporters to be law-abiding and respectful in their conduct of relationship with fellow players of politics.”

Awak added, “We ardently pray that the State witnesses peace during campaigns, primaries, the elections proper and all the days of our lives. As we settle down to business, we sincerely urge you, indeed demand, that you conduct your good selves as mature and responsible citizens of Gombe State.”
