DSS meets in Gombe over security challenges

Gombe State Deputy Governor, Manassah Jatau, has declared open a two-day conference of state directors of State Security Service of the North East sub-region geared towards tackling security challenges in the zone.

Declaring the conference open in Gombe, Jatau challenged the state directors of the Service to proffer solutions that would tackle security challenges confronting the North East and the country in different forms, methods and trends.

Jatau called on the top notches of the state security service in the North East to take advantage of the recent technological innovations to tackle the challenges introduced and compounded by the same technological advancement.

The deputy governor noted that the conference of the state Directors of the North East is coming at the right time when the zone is faced by increased security problems and a time when the Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya is fighting with all determination and dedication to ensure safety of lives and properties of people in the state.

He highlighted that, the position of the state in the centre of the North East,and peaceful coexistence makes it a hub and epicentre of activities, that attracted all sorts of persons,including Internally Displaced Persons, causing population explosion, and making it prune to all criminal activities.

He said, “As masters, veterans, and professionals in the art of security, be it social, or physical, you know the obvious implications of the few features highlighted above as you struggle to carry out your roles in your society and other states with such environment. Both good and bad people are attracted to the state. Therein lies the dilemma and a thorny issue as you perform your functions.”

In his remarks, chairman of the conference, Babagana Bulama, the Adamawa Director, State Security Service, said that the conference was in the sequence of zonal quarterly conferences initiated by the Service to bring together state directors within the country’s various geopolitical zones with a view to brain storming on the general security situation of their respective zones.

He said, “The initiative is anchored on the belief that, states within the subregion are faced with common and similar security challenges, most of which cuts across state boundaries with peculiar manifestations in individual states in some occasions.”

Also speaking, The State Director, State Security Service, Abba Abdullahi, said that the conference was necessitated by the insecurity in the country, particularly terrorism, banditry, kidnap for ransom and other criminal activities affecting the peaceful coexistence of the people.
