Must Read

Argentina have qualified for the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar after beating Netherlands 4-3 on penalties on Friday.

The South American side will now play Croatia in the semi-final. Croatia had earlier in the day sent Brazil home from the penalty spot.

The match ended 2-2 on duration time. The extra-time produced no goal and penalties had to decide the winner.

Argentina converted four of the kicks while Netherlands missed two kicks.

Lautaro Martinez scored the winning penalty for Argentina, as he played the ball into the left of the net, giving goalkeeper Andries Noppert no chance.

Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez was the hero of the penalty shootout as he saved two penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis.

The South American side opened scoring on 35th minute through Nahuel Molina. He received a precise pass inside the box from Lionel Messi and he beat the goalkeeper with a neat finish into the left side of the net.

Lionel Messi made it 2-0 for Argentina from the penalty spot on 73 minutes. He won the battle of wills and sent an unstoppable penalty past Andries Noppert into right side of the goal.

Netherlands pulled one back seven minutes to duration time. Steven Berghuis clipped a neat ball into the box in the direction of Wout Weghorst, who jumped highest and steered a bullet header from the centre of the box into the left side of the goal.

The European side equalised 11 minutes into added time. Wout Weghorst fired home from close range after he received the ball from the resulting free kick from Teun Koopmeiners. He hit the back of the net with a precise strike and made it 2-2.
