Stars will battle in-form Nasarawa United in the semi-finals of the 2021 Aiteo Cup, after dumping holders Kano Pillars out of the competition with a 1-0 win at the Lokoja centre, while Rivers United play Bayelsa United.

Sadeeq Yusuf scored the only goal in the 48th minute as the Akure-based side held on for a famous win despite a late charge from the champions.

In the other quarter-final fixture, Silas Nwankwo’s 45th-minute strike was enough to help Nasarawa United edge Gombe United by at the Jos centre. The Solid Miners are also in contention for a continental ticket from the league as they are currently placed second on the log.

Rivers United ended Niger Tornadoes dream of a place in the semi-finals with a stoppage-time goal from striker Fortune Omoniwari in the 92nd minute.

Bayelsa United’s dream of playing continental football remain intact after they sent Gateway United packing from the competition courtesy of a 5-4 penalty win after regulation time ended 1-1.

The Dipreye Teibowei tutored side took the lead in the 59th minute from James Emo’s perfectly placed header, while Julius Ikechukwu grabbed the equaliser with a well-taken left-footed shot.

The winners of the Aiteo Cup will be awarded a slot in the 2021/22 CAF Confederation Cup.

The Nigeria Football Federation has until July 31 to submit the list of clubs that will represent the country at the continental inter-club competitions.
