THUNDERSTORM, accompanied by downpour, at the weekend, wreaked havoc in many parts of Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
The development culminated in the destruction of buildings, shops and electrical installations.
Checks indicated that areas affected mostly by the incident included Oja Oba, Igbona, Ago Wande, Ibokun road, among others.
Roofs of many buildings were blown away by the winds, just as electric poles were pulled by the impact of the development.
In many parts of Osogbo, the rain, which commenced late Saturday evening, was mild and lasted for 10 minutes, while in other neighbourhoods, it was heavy, coupled with thunderstorms.
When the Nigerian Tribune visited the affected areas on Sunday, it was discovered that the worst hit were neighborhoods with ancient building structures.
At Ibokun road and Oja Oba, roofs of many buildings were blown off, while walls of some old buildings could not withstand the thunderstorms, as they were pulled down.
At Igbona and Ago Wande areas, some new buildings and electric poles were affected by the thunderstorms.
Speaking on the incident, the Regional Manager, Branding and Communication, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Miss Kikelomo Owoeye, confirmed that some electrical installations of the company were affected by the thunderstorm.
According to her, “at Oke Ijetu area, the feeder of the company had to be switched off, because of loss of some lines, to forestall any ugly accident.”
She stressed that some areas within the state capital were in darkness because of the affected lines.Owoeye assured that the management of IBEDC was working towards restoring supply to the affected areas soon.
