Lawmakers advocate housing scheme, women empowerment
by Femi Makinde and Kunle Falayi
Bamidele, a representative of Ekiti Central Federal Constituency 1, said during the monthly lecture of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria in Ibadan, on Friday that housing for all in Nigeria could only be made possible through the implementation.
Also, the representative of Ekiti Central in the Senate, Babafemi Ojudu, has rallied support for Nigerian women.
The lawmaker, during an empowerment programme for 570 women in his constituency and inauguration of Raliat Ojudu Women Development Centre in Ado Ekiti on Friday, also said the country needed conscious efforts to develop the women.
Speaking on ‘Shelter for All: A Myth or Reality?’, Bamidele said the housing deficit in the country should be solved through a private sector housing construction programme.
He said, “Section 16(2)(d) of the constitution provides that the government should ensure that suitable and adequate shelter are provided for all citizens.
“But despite this constitutional provision, it has been estimated that Nigeria sits on a housing deficit estimated at 16 million housing units in 2006.
“An even higher number of Nigerians live in either substandard or sub-human accommodations.”
Ojudu said the development centre would soon begin to visit towns and villages in the area to attend to the medical needs of women and children.
Ojudu, who said women needed to be empowered economically to make them contribute more to the development of the nation, said most women were better in resources management.
