10 Urhobo Students Get Atamu’s Scholarships

 

 

Pan-Urhobo group of professionals in Lagos, Atamu Social Klub of Nigeria (ASKN) is set to give scholarships to 10 indigent but brilliant Urhobo students from different institutions across the country.

According to Fidelis Odia, chairman of Atamu Scholarship Awards Committee, the students who would be given the scholarships at an awards ceremony billed for the Palace of the Osu Ivie of Agbarho on Saturday, November 24, emerged after scaling a tough screening and interview excise conducted by a panel of respected academics at Delta State University, Abraka made up of Prof. Rose Aziza, Dr. Sunny Ahwefeada and E. M. Darah, and another in Lagos comprising Dr. Thomas Evwierhoma, Dr. Anthony Okeregbe, and Innocent Towurhor.

While Dr. Sunny Awhefeada of the Department of English and Literary Studies, Delsu, would present a paper on the “Role of Socio-Cultural Institutions in the Development and Growth of Education” at the awards ceremony, Chief Michael Omeru, chairman of Niger Construction Company, would chair the event, which is expected to attract respected personalities from different walks of life.
Odia explained that the maiden edition of the Atamu annual scholarship awards was meant to precede the takeover of the Atamu Educational Endowment Fund instituted during the administration of Obaro Osah, former president of the club, by a board of Urhobo leaders.

Speaking on the initiative, Valentine Omamogho, president of Atamu, commended Osah and Abraham Ogbodo, his predecessors in office, for working tirelessly towards realising the project aimed at assisting indigent but brilliant Urhobo students through school.
Urging well-placed Urhobo people to work together with a view to developing the Urhobo nation and encouraging the growth and development of its people, Omamogho insisted that education was one of the surest ways of engendering development of a community.

Atamu, he said, had in its over two decades of existence embarked on different projects to promote the Urhobo agenda of development, including the launch of the first ever Urhobo Dictionary, hosting of a forum to discuss Urhobo affairs, among others. The initiative, he explained, were in line with the club’s objective of contributing to the overall growth and development of the Urhobo nation.
