Army trains 435 personnel for counter terrorism

The Army Base Camp, Kachia, in Kaduna State yesterday  began the training of 435 security personnel on Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency (CTCOIN) for batch 5/4, to address the nation’s security challenges.

The personnel included 379 soldiers and 60 Armed Squad personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who would undergo a four-week training.

CTCOIN Director, Brig-Gen. Tijjani Golau, said the training was aimed at tackling the upsurge and attack on security agencies and structures.

He said: “The most recent of the security challenge has been upsurge in the activities of gunmen and faceless people as evidenced in the spate of bombings and armed attacks on security operatives and innocent Nigerians.

“It is apparent that these contemporary security challenges have highlighted grey areas in our doctrine on internal security and counter insurgency, which need to be addressed to enhance operational efficiency of the nation.”

Golau said the trainees would be actively engaged in internal security duties at the expiration of the programme and advised them to take all instructions seriously.

“ This is because they may prove invaluable to you at one point or another in your future assignment.“

The Director said the objective of the programme was to produce crack, combat ready troops capable of operating in “Build Up Area“.

Golau said the course would cover physical training, mental alertness, weapon handling, road block and fighting in close quarter battles as well as VIP protection.

“ Others will include guarding of KPs and VPs, attacking terrorist hideout, airport duties, air craft and bus rescue, among others.“

Meanwhile, the Commander of NSCDC, Zone B, Mr. Bartholomew Eziegbo, said that the training would foster synergy and operational standard for the security agencies to meet current challenges.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Public Safety and National Security, Bello Mutawalle,  has urged the media to exercise restrain in reporting security issues.

Mutawalle (PDP-Zamfara), in a statement, said that “in times like this”, the media should take the path of caution.

He said government was working toward restoring peace and harmony in the country.

Mutawalle said: “Both the National Assembly and the executive are working hard to restore peace in the country and their effort should be complimented by the media.’’
