The Rivers State caucus in the National Assembly has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over the “politicization” of the State Security Services (SSS) and the Nigerian Army by the state’s chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
It added that involving security agencies in politics in a desecration of the institutions, and is antithetical to the anti-corruption campaign.
The caucus, in a statement issued Tuesday and signed by 16 Senators and House of Representatives members, accused the Director of SSS and Chief of Army Staff of meddling in the election petition tribunals handling electoral disputes from the 2015 general elections in the state.
It recalled an earlier petition to the President on July 23, 2015 where allegations were made that the Director of SSS arrested and detained several staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission following a petition by the Governorship candidate of the APC , Mr. Dakuku Peterside.
“It took the intervention of the Senate to make the SSS realise that they were acting ‘ultra vires’ their powers under the National Security Agencies Act Cap. N74. They admitted and
indeed under the enabling statute, they have no business interfering into electoral matters, particularly when there is a pending litigation,” the caucus said in the statement.
The statement added that the Director of SSS has again sent officers to investigate whether an election took place in the Rivers South East Senatorial District, following a petition by former Senator Magnus Abe.
