River Kaduna Overflows, Destroys 300 Houses

The affected areas within the metropolis include Makarfi road Airforce road, Katunga road, Ambassador road, Ononiwu Close, all in Abubakar Kigo Road New Extension located near the river.
Also affected were the Rafin Guza, popularly known as legislative Quarters in Ungwan Dosa area, as well as some parts of Malali, Ungwan Rimi and Gobarau area, just about 100 metres away from the private residence of Vice President Namadi Sambo.
But, the state Emergency Management Agency (SEMA)) confirmed that 178 houses were affected by the flooding.
The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of SEMA, Mallam Abubakar Zakari Adamu, said the agency had ordered communities residing along Abubakar Kigo road in Kaduna North local government, Rafinguza area and Nasarawa in Chikun local government area to immediately leave areas as a result of unprecedented water level coming into the river.
Adamu said the agency had since notified those living in the affected areas to take precautionary measures by relocating from such areas, stressing that: “Residents have been advised to move to the high grounds for the safety of their lives and property.”
Residents of Kigo New Extension, a predominantly Igbo settlement were seen making frantic efforts to salvage their belongings when THISDAY visited the area, just as relations, sympathisers and friends were seen giving helping hands to those affected.
According to one of the residents of the area, Oscar Okeke, whose house was over flooded, said: “We have been receiving hearing news report from the radio, television that there will be flood, so we decided to send our families to somewhere else.
