Special Election Team of the Nigeria Police, Cone six command, has arrested one Mr Sunday Madueke with 813 permanent voter cards, PVCs.
The team was inaugurated by Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, in charge of the zone, Tunde Ogunsakin, who has consistently warned against improper conduct before, during and after the general election.
Head of the Special Election Team and a Deputy Superintendent of Police, DSP Friday Obere, in a statement said the suspect was nabbed on Monday, April 6, at Izzi community in the state.
Obere said the AIG received a call on Easter Sunday, April 5, on one of the zone’s dedicated phone lines about two men possessing multiple PVCs.
The team members were immediately alerted and moved into Izzi community where the suspects were said to have been last seen.
Zone six comprises Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Ebonyi states.
He said upon sighting the police, the suspects made a run for it, with the men of the special election team in hot pursuit.
The statement reads, “The suspects took convoluted paths of the town but were apprehended when they attempted to jump over a fence. The police arrested one of the suspects, Sunday Madueke, 31, who hails from Izzi community.
“Madueke was in possession of a ‘Ghana-mustgo’ bag that contained the PVCs. The AIG has ordered a thorough investigation to be carried out and more arrests are expected to follow.”
Speaking on the development, AIG Ogunsakin commended the Special Electoral Team members for their determination and commitment and berated those who have insisted on toeing the path of crime despite repeating warnings against it.
He took the opportunity to restate the police’s commitment to ensuring hitchfree elections in the states under the zone.
Ounsakin further encouraged all voters to exercise their franchise without fear of oppression or intimidation from any quarter
